If it seems like you can’t go a week without seeing more horrendous animal cruelty in the news, you’re about to hit your quota.
The latest hails from Mercy for Animals, the Los Angeles-based animal rights group that’s been behind several other recent undercover investigations covered by Organic Authority. In its latest undercover video, MFA investigators document appalling abuses at Perdue Farms.
Workers in the video are seen throwing chickens against walls and stomping animals to death. The footage led to the arrest of one worker, Danny Miranda, who MFA reports was charged with four counts of felony animal cruelty.
The charges are especially significant as they are the first time felony charges have been filed over abuses to factory-farmed chickens (following an undercover investigation) in the U.S. “If convicted, he could face more than two years imprisonment for each count,” MFA reports on its website.
Miranda faces more than two years imprisonment for each count of cruelty.
Despite the victory in securing the first-ever felony charges for abusing chickens, MFA says it’s really just a drop in the bucket; “But sadly, this abuse runs rampant,” the group says. “At Perdue Farms, chickens are treated as mere meat-producing machines whose short lives are filled with misery and deprivation. Perdue purposely breeds chickens to grow so unnaturally fast they often suffer from painful leg deformities and frequently die in agony from organ failure, including heart attacks. These poor birds are also forced to live for weeks or months in their own waste inside filthy, windowless factory farm sheds.”
Mercy for Animals is calling on Perdue to adopt “meaningful animal welfare policies” in order to decrease the amount of animal cruelty in its supply chain. It’s asking the chain to cease using “selective breeding for rapid growth and shift to slower-growing breeds of birds to prevent health problems; provide birds with more space, clean litter, access to natural light, and environmental enrichments; and replace live-shackle slaughter methods with less cruel systems that eliminate the horrific suffering caused by shackling, shocking, and slitting the throats of conscious animals.”
