Wine for Cats? Yeah, That’s a Thing

Wine for cats is a thing.

Just when you thought you’ve heard everything, you come across something new while surfing the Interwebs. That’s what happened to me last week when I came across wine for cats. Wine.For.Cats.

Apollo Peak is a fairly new company that makes and markets what it calls a wine for cats. Somewhat obviously it’s not actually wine–since it’s not made from grapes and it doesn’t contain alcohol of any kind–but it is liquid. And reddish purple made from all-natural ingredients that include a blend of water, organic catnip, organic beets, sea salt, and ascorbic acid.

The offerings include: Pinot Meow, Moscato, White Kittendel, Catbernet and more. There’s even ZinfanTail and Malbark for the canine buddies in your life. The various colors of the varieties come from using different colors of beets, so the “red wine” is made with red beets and the “white wine” is made with yellow beets.

While not all cats are attracted to catnip, only about 65 percent of cats are, wine for cats is made with beets to draw more cats in for a yummy drink. And as anyone who has put out catnip for their feline overlords know, when cats smell (or roll around on a pile of) catnip, they can get quite silly and rambunctious. The essential oil in catnip, which is part of the mint family, is what drives cats wild. Researchers aren’t exactly sure how it works, but it does seem to mimic feline “happy” pheromones that stimulate receptors in their tiny evil brains.

But beyond rolling around in it, ingesting catnip can make cats super chill and mellow. Very much like what happens when humans drink wine. Cats who ingest catnip just might curl up for a nice cuddle with their favorite humans.

The CFO, or Chief Feline Officer, over at Apollo Peak is actually named Apollo. He is a gray Chartreux cat who was rescued from the streets of Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the summer of 2007 by his human Brandon Zavala (the founder of Apollo Peak). Apollo is the head tester in charge and he even has his own blog.

Apollo Peak wine for cats is available in pet stores in some states, but it is also available for purchase online. So, the next time you feel like opening a bottle of wine, consider opening one for your feline buddy, too.
